Zelma Stone - “Fly”
The first single from Bay Area darling Zelma Stone’s forthcoming EP dropped last week, and to be honest - I’m obsessed.
Zelma Stone, stage name of Bay Area native Chloe Zelma Studebaker, somehow eluded our purview of this year’s Noise Pop Festival lineup; She opened up The Independent last week for Stone Foxes’ Saturday night show. “Fly” is the first single from Studebaker’s Dreamland EP, dropping April 17th - and it certainly deserves it’s own spotlight.
A dedication to her Grandpa Bob, the song expands into a sepia toned rumination of the impermanence of life. Studebaker’s voice creeps into the track like a sunbeam through the blinds of a still room. Her own guitar work, alongside that of Kevin Fielding, is almost tangible - like flecks of dust reflecting light. The bass and drums, courtesy of Haley Pan and Jake Kissner respectively, almost feel as though they’re a part of Studebaker - manifesting out of her head whenever she opens her mouth to sing. Rounding everything out perfectly are the backing vocals of Craig Jacobs and the resounding production of Maryam Qudus of Tiny Telephone Studios.
It’s so encouraging to see someone else from San Mateo create something so personal and cathartic - We’re incredibly excited to hear her latest EP.
