Quarantined, Together 02

Welp, it's been TEN DAYS! The City and County of San Francisco, along with other surrounding counties, ordered all residents to shelter in place. No curfew was established, nor any ‘threat of enforcement,’ but it's a given that everyone should remain at home unless seeking food, medical assistance, or required to report for work.

At first this felt like a prime excuse to veg out, listen to music, catch up on television, read my book - all while casually letting my inner introverted self scream with joy at a government mandated stay in.

Oh, how I was wrong.

Within a few short hours, social media blitzed. I was quickly reminded that this no longer meant a trip to my local bar to vent frustrations from work or politics. No more shows to dance away my ever mounting anxiety. Hell, this no longer meant I could casually practice extroverted, socially-leaning behavior whenever I felt up to the challenge.

The world is rapidly changing. Often by the day, sometimes by the hour - a new development comes to light and with it a new sense of fear, panic, and helplessness. As we look forward into the unknown there are some of us already planning and making light of the situation.

Tortoiseshell has a running list of places to donate and orgs to reach out to for assistance. I encourage everyone to chip in where they can, even if it’s only a few bucks. It’s up to us to save our scene and keep the culture alive.

(Please check out our previous post in this series for the updated list.)

Social media is hosting a veritable ‘stay at home party’ with musicians rallying by live streaming performances from their homes. The culture is alive via the digital realm - you can cut the artistic intentions in the atmosphere with a knife. We will not go quietly into the night!

As far as this weekend goes - it seems we're gearing up for a real actual Couchella experience!

Beatport Presents: ReConnect. A Global Music Series (A 24 artist, 24 hour, global DJ set)

https://www.beatportal.com/feed-beatportal/reconnect-24-hour-stream/

Highlights include Bonobo, Griz, Tokimonsta, Carl Cox, Nina Kraviz, and Nicole Moudaber - cause what-a-time-to-be-alive when we get treated to great music delivered to our living room! During the livestream viewers can leave a tip (say, a casual bar tab spent on Friday night?) with monies collected for Association for Electronic Music.

Resident Advisor is streaming a 42 hour marathon rave dubbed Club Quarantäne set to #saveourscene. Why not pretend we can party for two days straight at the club? Dig out your shameless club attire and turn down the lights (and turn up those LED lights; or keep it dark if that’s your thing) for this one.

Viewers can donate to support projects such as:

Storied Texas institution Austin City Limits is streaming episodes from their back catalogue - starting with LCD Soundsystem on Saturday 3/28: https://acltv.com/2020/03/23/shelter-at-home-with-streaming-episodes-of-austin-city-limits

All in all, We hope that everyone remains safe and sane as we all hunker down together to help flatten the curve. Let’s remember to reach out to one another with compassion and love; and frequently dammit - we have the technology!

Cheers from Tortoiseshell
